Jobwise

A work-in-progress, browser-based resume and cover letter builder with local drafts, templates, and document previews.

Jobwise is an experiment in making resume and cover letter editing straightforward without requiring an account. You can choose a template, fill in your content, and see a document preview as you work.

It is still a work in progress. The editing experience, template layouts, and print output need further refinement, so it is better viewed as an evolving project than a finished application.

The Idea

Application documents contain personal information. Jobwise’s initial approach is to keep drafts in browser storage rather than require a hosted account or a backend for saving them.

Local storage is not a backup: clearing browser data can remove drafts. JSON import and export provide a way to keep a separate copy and move documents between browsers.

What Is Implemented

  • Resume and cover letter editors.
  • Template selection and live document previews.
  • Local autosave and JSON backup import/export.
  • Print and PDF export through the browser’s print interface.

The export workflow uses browser printing, not a separate document-generation service. Layout and pagination still need careful review before using an exported document for an application.

Built With

Jobwise uses React, TypeScript, and Vite. Templates have a typed contract, shared styling tokens, and reusable document blocks. Vitest provides automated tests, but passing tests does not make every editing and printing scenario reliable.

What Needs Work

The next step is improving the existing workflow rather than expanding the feature list: resolving bugs, making template behaviour more consistent, and checking that exported documents match their previews across browsers.

The GitHub repository contains the current implementation and template-authoring documentation.
